In praise of strategy games that let you pause

In praise of strategy games that let you pause

For a long time I bounced off real-time strategy on mobile. Too fast, too fiddly, too many things happening at once on a screen the size of a coaster. Then I played Iron Tide Command and its pause-and-plan approach changed my mind.

Being able to freeze the action and issue orders turns chaos into a puzzle. Suddenly I could actually think about where to put defenders instead of frantically dragging units and hoping.

It's a small feature that makes the whole genre approachable on a phone. You get the depth of strategy without the twitch-reflex pressure that clashes with touch controls.

If real-time strategy has scared you off before, look for that pause option. It might be the difference between frustration and a game you genuinely love.
